Method and selection

The study was made in vivo on human participants.

Design:

Treatment: The patients were stratified into the following three groups: SYNBIO – patients receiving standard low volume enteral feeding formula supplemented with Synbiotic 2000 Forte. FIBRE – patients receiving standard low volume enter- al feeding formula with the same fibres and in the same amount as in Synbiotic 2000 Forte, but no lactic acid bacteria as in SYNBIO. CONTROL – patients receiving standard low volume enteral feeding formula.

Where and when: Between 2005 and 2008, Department of Surgery, Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital, Riga, Latvia.

Sample size: 90 patients

Sample criteria:                    Patients suffering severe acute pancreatitis.

Analysed material:

Results and indicative results

Overall, low infection rates, high success of the conservative treatment, short ICU and hospital stay and reduced necessity for surgical interventions were observed in SYNBIO/FIBRE groups. (s. 136).

Early low-volume oral synbiotic/prebiotic supplemented enteral stimulation of the gut is feasible and can be successfully applied in the treatment of SAP. Positive therapeutic effect can be associated with improvement of the gut barrier and enhancement of the acute phase response.

Provision of further clinical trials is essential for collection of valid evidence regarding the value of synbiotic/prebiotic application in the treatment protocol of SAP. (s. 136-137).
